Welcome to the 2018-2019 School year! This is the (mostly) one stop page for information about Mr. Hofer's Reading/Language arts class! To the right, there's a button that allows you to view and print a new reading log if you need to, a button with a viewable/printable copy of our current poem that we're working on, a button with a viewable/printable copy of our current spelling list, and a link to a page with the books we've been reading aloud in class, in case your student would like to get a copy of their own. It's going to be a great school year!

New Poem again!Hello! Our next poem is "Eletelephony" by Laura Richards. I've linked it to the "current poem" button. It will be due on March 22nd (Thursday after spring break). Have a great day!
New PoemOur new poem, "Father William" by Lewis Carroll is now linked. The poem will be due on February 22, and it will be a fill in the blank poem (like "The First Thanksgiving of All" was).
Happy New Year!Happy 2018 everybody! I hope you all had a great and relaxing break, and I look forward to seeing your students bright and early tomorrow morning! I'll be introducing the new poem tomorrow. It's a traditional Mother Goose rhyme called "For Want of a Nail". Students will be getting a hard copy tomorrow, but I've already linked the file to the "current poem" button if you'd like a preview, or if you need it any time before it's due on Thursday, January 25th. Reading logs will start back up next Monday, January 8th. Have a great day!
New Poem again!Hello!
We have a new poem going home today, "The First Thanksgiving of All". The button to the right is linked to it now. The students will not be reciting this one out loud. This is a long poem, so it will be fill in the blank. On the day it's due (November 16), the students will be given a copy of the poem with 20 of the words replaced with blanks. They will need to be able to write the words in the blanks. There will be no word bank, and I will not deduct points for spelling. There is also not a study sheet with the blanks already on it, because that focuses on memorizing a list of 20 words instead of memorizing the poem. For practice you might consider covering up some words in the poem and having them practice remembering the missing words. Have a great week! New PoemHello!
I've updated the website with the new poem, "Catch a Little Rhyme" by Eve Merriam. The poem will be due on Thursday, September 28th. Also, this week (week of September 5-8), there will be no reading log. Have a great day! Mr. Hofer Hello!Sorry for the late update of the webpage. It's been a hectic first three weeks of the school year, but a fun one. It's been great getting to know all of our new third grade pod B students. They're fantastic! There are a few changes to the webpage for this school year. First off, the spelling button is gone, since spelling is now being handled by our excellent Writing teacher, Mrs. Thomasson. Due to interest over the last couple of years, I'm also adding a button with a list of the books that we read together at the beginning of class to have fun, discuss literary concepts, and focus up for our reading. I read different books with different classes based on class interest and on concepts that we're working on, so it's possible that your student might not recognize all of the books. Also, the website is updated with the first poem, "By Myself", which is due next Friday, September 1st. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. My email address is [email protected] . Have a great weekend!
Reminders...Hi!
Just a couple of reminders: Our poem, "For Want of a Nail" is due next Thursday, January 26th. Students can sign up in class to do the poem early for 5 bonus points starting on Monday. Also, due to a discrepancy between a few "a"s and "the"s, I will accept either version when they say the poem. Also, just the standard reminder that the current poem, spelling list (Wind in the Willows week 3), and a copy of the reading log are, as always, in the buttons to the right. Have a great weekend!! Mr. Hofer Happy New Year!I hope you had a wonderful holiday season! Just a heads up that as we begin the new year (and the third 9 weeks grading period), we've got a new spelling list due next Friday (January 13th), a new poem ("For Want of a Nail") and a new novel that we're starting next Monday, January 9th (Wind in the Willows). The links to the poem and the spelling list are live to the right. I look forward to the new year and the new semester!
